Please note that Dr. Beverley Mullings, the second candidate for the Human
Geography position at Scarborough, will be visiting the Department on Friday,
January 18. Dr. Mullings' research talk will be held in room 2125 at 2:30pm.
Please see below for abstract. We encourage everyone to attend.

Dr. Beverley Mullings, Assistant Professor
Department of Geography, Syracuse University

"Jamaica's 'Silicon Beach': A Cause of, or Cure for Widening Urban
Inequalities?"

In the 1980s as many Caribbean countries moved away from import substitution
development strategies, new forms of export- oriented industry were created. In
Jamaica, most of these new industries were located in export processing zones
in areas away from the Kingston, primate city. Many argue that in combination
with tourism, these new export-oriented industries reduced urban inequalities
by creating new growth poles for employment and local wealth creation. Drawing
upon a study of the development of 'Silicon Beach'- the name given to
Jamaica's export information industry, this talk explores whether this current
form of service export has contributed to the decline, or widening, of urban
inequality.
