Last Thursday, we were discussing the possibility of using some of the extra
Baader solar filter material with some cheap cardstock to make 3-D-glasses-
style eclipse glasses. The only other thing that would be needed would be
some glue and/or double sided tape (of which I have plenty left over from
making my solar filter cells, and black posterboard too). We'd just need to
know how many we wanted to make, buy the appropriate amount of solar filter
material at about 9 cents/sq in, and get it all together in one place before
next Tuesday and start cutting.
I'd suggest doing them at cost for anyone who comes along to help
cutting/gluing/taping/whatevering, and charging a small markup for our time
to anyone who just wants to outright buy them. I'd guess they'd come to
about 30 cents for a bit more than 3 sq in of material (based on the area in
my 3-D glasses), maybe a dime or so worth of posterboard, a fair bit of work
cutting them out just so, so perhaps $1/pair would be about right? If we
made too many, we could always keep extras around for the next eclipse or
June 2012, whichever comes first.
(heads off to the web to check solar eclipse schedules)
