[Try Astronomy] Re: Solar filters

Heh, OK - I guess the consensus is against me on this one. I'll leave the
idea alone for solar - it does kinda seem like trying to find the safest way
to run across a busy interstate. I might keep the
pinholes-in-black-construction-paper idea for lunar observing. I'd like to
see what effect it has there, and for lunar viewing there's no safety
issues. I'm thinking it might help bring out some detail on the lunar
surface by reducing the amount of light glare. Another thought I had, also
for lunar and planetary viewing on the cheap, was colored plastic wrap over
the objective or under the eyepiece.

I would abandon the pinhole idea all together...it's not safe for your eyes *or* your camera.



Best to use commercial solar filters. Baader film is downright cheap and
very effective.

Hehehe...that's why I listed safety ahead of satisfaction. If the focused
light coming out of the eyepiece feels anywhere near dangerous (read: warm),
I won't look through it. Another thing running through my mind is what I
could use besides my skin to test the heat, as it's possible that less heat
than would bother my inner wrist could damage my eye. Believe me, I work
with computers for a living - being blind is not very conducive to that type
of career. I may just end up using my camera instead of my eyes - I have
learned that photographic solar film filters a bit less than visual grade,
so my pinhole filter combined with a superfast shutter speed may be enough
for that use.
