Ok, my mistake, no matter how I searched I couldn't find 'real' info on the dllcc stuff. but I DID see tons of mentions of it and not one 'guru' said anything about worm, that's all I wanted. I didn't want Juanita going off the charts with scans thinking she had a worm... And I couldn't agree more about cookies.. all they do is set preferences mostly. See a p[age that asks for your zip code? Like MSN so it can show you your weather, etc> there's a cookie. And the HP printer,, sooo true, got one,,, try to turn things off and all heck breaks loose.. it still works but it's a pain.. Not sure about firewall tho, I use 6.1.737.000 with no problems at all.. I worry that a version way back down around 2ish won't have the protection she needs in today's internet? At the most I wouldn't personally go back past 5.5. I've had the pro and free version for 3 years on all 5 of my system here, but I'm no Zone Alarm specialist. And for the time being I'd stay away from any and all reg cleaners. Also I'd stay away from system cleaners.. anything that does blanket cleans I'm leery of.. yes you need to clean out 'some' temp files, but not all of them.. ever had to reinstall something or do a repair install of something and windows can't find the files.. it's because you cleaned out too much of the temp files.. When a program installs it marks the temp folder where it holds the install files.. If you do a repair install it goes right back to the temp folder.. but if you clean out all temps like everyone suggests, then your program will be telling you it can't find the original files and it now needs a the CD...full blown system cleaners.. one click fixers... anything that does system wide changes that you can't monitor or can't get back, stay away from them. I don't know much about major geeks site.. ..other than being a download mirror for some things, I don't go there.. BETCHA couldn't repeat that sister's uncle's cousin's thingy again from scratch!??!?!?:))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Bruce inNY _____ From: triadtechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:triadtechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of ChasM49@xxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2005 8:24 PM To: triadtechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [triadtechtalk] Re: Windows Messanger In a message dated 12/20/2005 3:12:44 P.M. Central Standard Time, beddy1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx writes: The dllcc and the dlcccoms stuff is related to your printer nope.... its part of dell software that allows the owner to make checks and updates from Dells website and to allow Dell techs to do troubleshooting from a remote site... namely Dell.... Dells sort of remote check point.... The viewpoint thingy is to watch media type things online... yes.but also....... what is does do is allow 3d viewing...and it checks for updates to its program....so it can stay updated due to changes in web sites graphics and does contain a "cookie".... now loads of idiots have determined cookies are spyware... geee... ever see that little box says save my info?... that sets a cookie, but according to Major Geeks... cookies are dangerous...Major Geeks are the dangerous part of this mess she has... think Major Geeks need to read some of Fred Langas writings about cookies... but that's my opinion.... You don't absolutely HAVE to have your printer load on every boot.... nope....... if she has an all in one.. printer,fax,copier,scanner.... better load at boot or she will be going nuts trying to make it work especially if its a HP device. if memory serves me she says her HP printer.....and HP is very very very persnicity about its files... if you check they now are coming out with a "universal set of files" for all of their printers.... one size fits all......plus... spooler file from MS is needed at boot.... so if she stops printer from loading at boot then her printer wont print at command..... firewalls...... for Juanita.. the best firewall she can use is Zone alarm version 2.6 or earleir.. no further than that... dump any version over 2.6 as it takes an absolute near expert to run any later than that version..... go to microsofts site and search for the Microsoft antispyware...... best one going and works... its the old Giant antispyware... and is more effective than all the others... but to get it you have to have a genuine MS licensed product as your operating system... not a pirated copy..... adaware is also handy to have on the pc... just a bit of added defense....and as for a regedit... again... go to MS site.. search for regeditxp version... and only use that... none other, unless again... you are a near expert in registry editing... better to be safe than sorry... and considering the problems Jaunita has shown in all versions of windows.... stay safe... do not touch any other programs that mess over your operating system... NONE WHAT SO EVER!!!!!.. no matter who says what... especially when comes to XP..... she claims she didn't buy a program for character recognition.. but seems she has one installed by the printer install.. forget which one she named... think was abby... but if she wants to scan a document in and make changes then its needed... comes with the printer install files.... and yes she bought it... part and parcel... each and every blessed thing that shows on her pc she paid for whether she wanted it or not.....now have to ask........ has the manual ever been opened for this computer and READ????????? if not.. then that is the starting point.....it will say what all has been installed and give you info as to what they do etc... and then go from there..... if programs arent needed then you would use the add/remove function in control panel so those items would be removed properly...... and if you mess around in startup....... becomes sort of like taking the battery out of your car and then complain to the dealer you car doesn't run correctly..... and reasoning for removing the battery is that it is a pollutant and not ecologically safe.....trying to use msconfig is not a good thing... as it clearly says it is for troubleshooting... and by dumping things from the startup listing is again a messup... go to each individual program and make the settings for each on as to when they start.... again... its all there in the help section of each program....and they just do happen to work.... one of the best speed up tactics for any version of windows is simply dump the icons from your desktop... they have to be loaded before the system begins to operate... why have them on the desktop when they are in the programs listings.... second spped up trick... dump all the fancy add on fonts you have placed in your computer... they are all loaded before windows system runs fully.... so if you dont use 150 different font styles why do you have them loading? and lastly.... keep away from major geek site... if you arent up to geek status that site will get you into big time problems.... ..... I see this on just about a daily basis,as I am on call for our local vets group here and a couple retirement centers to help the old folks out...... and in just about every case it turns out that the folks have done what has been told to them by their sisters cousins uncle who has a mechanic friend whose sister-in-law said her hair dressers doctors nurse who was told it by her daughters school cook who knows a guy who works in the bowling alley told her that if you have a teddy bear in your windows icons then its a virus and it will burn your drive up and slow your computer down to nothing......and its happened to her since she removed the teddy bear and now her pc doesn't work right so means its got a worm in its modem. I spend many an hour going thru these boxes and setting them back to normal and plead with them not to listen to just anybody.... but then.... couple months goes by.... and lo and behold I must visit them again.......unfortunately I do leave them my phone number....... and I do it free of charge...... not as a business... just volunteer my time..... which at times am running out of......hopefully not taken as an insult... but...... plain english ..... chuck..... in ok
