thanks for posting karen's letter.  it is devastating to read never mind to 
imagine being in her shoes.

  as we are not all in australia and able to help, i wonder what we can do 
from where we are besides send money.  is there any way we can write letters 
to government types, make a stink, cause them to be uncomfortable about what 
is going on with karen and alex?  someone should be very, very ashamed of 
how they are being treated.  my guess is that there must be someone we can 
shame into action.  as a canadian i would not know where to start as your 
system may be very different than ours.  how would angry letters from people 
all over the world work? would it help?  international attention is always 
unpleasant for bad government. can anyone find a reporter/news group who may 
be interested in their plight?  i am left thinking that thye are being 
treated as though they are less than human, less than significant.  i know 
things like this happen all over so i hope all the wonderful australians on 
this list understand i am not at all critisizing australia- just the actions 
of nasty, unfeeling, uncaring bureaucrats ( we certainly have our share in 
canada too).

any ideas?  i feel pretty helpless but would like to do something
