My ring story:
I did not get a diamond or any ring before we got married.  I had  
just bought myself a blue sapphire ring at a jewelry store about a  
month before we decided to get married.  I told myself that would  
have to do until I got a ring from him.  He promised to get me a  
genuine ruby and diamond ring on our 10th anniversary.  We got  
married in 1972.  No ring in 1982 or 1992.

But in 1999, my husband totally floored me with a diamond band ring.   
Not a single stone, but many smaller stones in a pattern on the  
band.  He wrapped it in a huge box with heavy tools in the bottom and  
with many smaller boxes inside the big one.  Even my daughter didn't  
know and she had always shopped with him or for him before.  We  
opened our presents as soon as our kids were all there on Christmas  
Eve at about 10:30 p.m.   We were supposed to have my family at our  
house the next day, but we got a call from the nursing home at about  
4:30 a.m. that my dad was dying.   We took everything with us and  
went to my mom's apartment right next door to the nursing home - I  
mean physically 10 feet.  Christmas was bittersweet.  I got my  
diamond ring on the 24th, but my dad passed away on the 26th.

Then, about 2 years ago, Dick's favorite aunt passed away.  Her  
husband had been career Air Force soldier and had spent a lot of time  
in Thailand and Japan and Vietnam.  She had many beautiful rings.   
Since she had no children and all of the nieces and nephews were  
there for the funeral (she treated them all like her special child -  
16 of them), they had a family auction of her things.  One of them  
was a genuine ruby ring.  I remember when she got it soon after we  
were married.  I tried it on and it fit.  My husband told me to bid  
on it.  Well, the "girls" sort of had a deal with everyone else there  
that if someone really wanted it, they got it on the bid of the  
wholesale appraisal.  So I got my ruby.  And it is set on an 18 c  
gold band.  I absolutely love it.

I love all of the rings I have, but the diamond ring and the ruby  
ring were such surprises, that they have to be my favorites.
