Hi Gena
>>>>>>>>I was hoping to get some help with a few questions!!
We have been chosen for an unborn baby that is due at any time...Birth mom
is in the hospital on bed rest until delivery due to placenta previa
....Here are the details we would love input on....
----AFP Quad Screen: Risk for Down syndrome: 1:37...with maternal age 1:29
Risk for Trisomy 18: 1:23
(they are saying that the baby will has Down syndrome (which we are thrilled
about!! LOL) BUT how can they say that if there is a risk for Trisomy 18 as
well????---can you have both or will it be one or the other?? A amnio has
not been done yet....)<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
what that means is that the baby has a 1:37 chance of having downs, while a
mother that age should only have a 1:29 chance, and the risk for T18 is
1:23. The AFP screen is Only a screening test not a diagnostic test that
would confirm the diagnosis
->>>>>>>>>>---There is no noted heart defect BUT shows shortened femurs,
midly dilated
bowel and a mass superior to the right kidney<<<<<<<<<<<<<
as I am not really up on my radiology I really cant comment
<<<<<<<<<<<----Smoked 1-2 packs of cig. a day for the first 20 weeks and
then reduced
that when she found out BUT not sure by how much...and she is on a nic.
patch while in the hosptial per the doctor....
----Drank 80 ounces of alcohol PER DAY for the first 20 weeks and then
reduced it to 24 ounces of alcohol PER DAY since then...since June 28th when
she was admitted to the hospital the alcohol has stopped....
----Urine Drug screen was postive for: acetaminophen, nicotine, opiates,
propoxyphene and cannabinoids<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I have a friend who works for infant development ( they see infants and
young children at risk for developmental delays here in Ontario Canada) and
she has told me that more damage is done from the alcohol then drugs, babies
do go through withdrawal from the drugs but the alcohol does the major
damage. This friend of mine actually has adopted 2 little boys with down's
syndrome but would not even consider a child with FAS, as children with
this disorder have severe social and behavioral issues that can be huge!
While I have never heard of a child having both t21 and t18 I have met a
child that has t18 and t13 and know someone who had a still born child with
3 of every chromosome so it could be possible to have both, but remember it
is a screening test only not diagnostic,
From your above I would have to say that the AFP screening does suggest that
the child will have something and the shortened femurs on the U/S could go
either way as neither t21 or t18 kids are tall, but the child could just be
short. The alcohol use is the thing that would really put the red flags up
for me!
