[tri-wings] Re: hope everyone is ok

Hi Mikki,

I probably shared this on the list before, but when I was in high =
school, my
mom made all of us kids volunteer a summer. I chose the Institute of
Logopedics, (http://www.heartspring.org). Most of the people were =
children,
but my assignment was a young man in his early 20s who had severe =
cerebral
palsy. I was the only male volunteer, so I guess that they figured it =
would
be more comfortable. I spent the summer basically just being Joe's =
friend.
Although I was intimated early on, I grew to appreciate Joe as a =
valuable
person. Physically, he could do little more than grunt, drool, and =
smile.
There is nothing that I could ever do that he didn't reward me with that
smile. We live is such a throw away world. If someone requires a little =
more
than what they produce, the trend is to relieve ourselves of the =
"burden."

The people who have not experienced involvement with these special =
people do
not understand that the value of a person isn't in what they "do" but =
who
they are. I wouldn't trade that summer for any summer I ever had. It =
takes
time to have a relationship with someone that allows us to see past =
their
productivity. I often wonder who is really more handicapped: people who =
have
to depend on others and learn to appreciate them, or those who don't =
have a
clue and just make lots of widgets. I sincerely suspect that the former =
are
happier.=20

I hope you get the job. You will do well.=20
