I do agree that no one wants to hear that their baby may die, but I fell
subject to that when I had my 1st sonogram last year before I had my
miscarrage. I wanted to know what went wrong with my pregnancy, but the doctor
said that he wasn't going to run the "million dollar" test. He said that they
only do that after a woman has had 4 or 5 miscarrages in a row. I guess that I
will never know as to what went wrong or if it was something that could be
prevented.
I believe that people need to be made aware that there are risks like trisomy
and other infant death causes, even if they chose to listen with deaf ears.
That way, they know that it is a possibility that the baby they are carrying
may not be healthy, that way it isn't a devistating shock IF something should
be wrong with their baby.
I know that the world in the eyes of a pregnant woman knows no wrong or
illness for their child, but it is one of those things that they believe there
is no imperfection in the world that would effect their baby.
When I was pregnant with my son (he is 4 now) I had the doctors run so many
tests on me to make sure my baby was going to be healthy, becasue when I was 13
my 1st nephew was born and he had a heart problem. It was corrected and now he
is a healthy, mouthy 11 year old. I was aware or problems that were in my
family's history and I wanted to make sure I was prepared for any and all
issues my child could have before I had him. I was 19 years old at the time,
but I wanted to know if I was going to have to make any special arrangements or
not.
I say this becasue, my father has Cerebrial Palsey, my cousin is a bleeder,
my nephew had the heart problem, my father also has seisures and I wanted to
make sure I had the understanding of how to care for a child with a serious
health issue. I don't know if I was the normal pregnant woman or not, becasue I
was doing research about different things that "could be" wrong with my child.
I never came accross anything on Trisomy. My son was born in 2001. I geuss the
reason I say I wasn't the regular pregnant woman is becasue I was 19 and
instead of doing what most of the women I have seen do, go shopping and gush, I
looked up different information and wanted any test that could be done.
I think all of that has to do with my background though! I am 1 of 15
grandkids and I am what would be considered the middle child. So, I have seen
all of my younger cousins from birth up and I was also taking care of my nephew
from the time he was born until I got older and moved out of my parents house.
So, I had a newborn every other weekend from the time I was 13. So, it was
almost like my son was my 2nd child.
I have been making people in my area aware of trisomy and some of the
complications since I have found out about it with the passing of my niece and
I just hope others do the same.
SORRY THIS IS SO LONG!! :)
