Sheila,

The short answer is that my older sister Carrie dubbed me Fawna at 14.
But then of course the question becomes, why on earth did she do that?

Good question as the name definately didn't fit the girl...but the first time
I saw the name I absolutely fell in love with it, despite it's risque
connotations.
And as Mary the birthday lady noted years ago, "Fawna sounds more like a
porno chat name then a trisomy one!"

Carrie was an English major, and I use to type all of her papers for her.
So the nickname Fawna is literary on origen. It comes from one of the books
in John Steinbeck's Cannery Row series. "Sweet Thursday" to be exact.
And in fact the original "Fawna" character was based on a historic circa 1940's
Canery Row denizen, named Flora.

As the story goes, oceanographer Doc Ricketts use to have an arrangement
with the brothel across the street from his laboratory. They provided him with
cold beer when he'd ran out late at night, and he'd patch up the girls &
customers
for them after fights. So one day Doc susposedly told the house madame that
she looked more like a fauna then a flora to him. And she responded that she
really liked that, and wondered if he'd mind if she kept the name, but of course
she misunderstood him and spelled it wrong.

Over the years I'd kind of gotten away from using the name. That is until my
mother learned the origen of it and was totally appalled. Well now that
cemented
it for me... Oh and by the way, this Fawna now runs a "cattery" too.
