[tri-wings] Re: TRISOMY 17 BABY MICHAEL.......MISDIAGNOSED

Theresa
I hear similar stories to this misdiagnosis story a lot. Spina bifida
is a major issue in Ireland, and I heard the story of a woman who was
told that her unborn daughter had hydrocephalus so severe that she was
told that her baby would be a vegetable from birth,if she was born
alive, and that the baby's head would be so big that she'd need a
c-section to give brth, and pushed and pushed her into terminating the
pregnancy. She had to take the doctors to court to stop the harassment,
and when her baby was born, her little girl was born naturally, as
perfect as can be.
It never hurts to ask for a second opinion. Although I understand
completely that some couples feel that termination is best for them, and
respect that choice thoroughly, doctors should give a full picture of
the issues involved, not the 'not compatible with life' speech, give
patients urls to resources and information, both good and bad, and give
people the opportunity to make a well informed decision about their
baby's life. All life, no matter how bent or broken a body is, is worth
fighting for.
I truly applaud your efforts, if more people stood up to doctors like
you are now, more babies, whether healthy or sick chromosomally, would
live to be an inspiration to other expectant parents. When my daughter
was diagnosed with T-18 and Turners syndrome, it was so devastating to
read of story after story of families whose babies die early in life
because of physical problems that would normally be repaired in an
otherwise healthy child. These babies are people too, so why do doctors
treat our babies like a temporary inconvenience to be pushed out the
door to die at home where they don't have to watch?
