I am going to post a link to an article in an Aussie newspaper yesterday. No
doubt this article will generate a lot of strong emotions, all I ask is that
you treat all concerned with respect and compassion. Remember, we have not
walked in their shoes and things in Australia are very different to those in
other countries. The media here in Australia are for the first time revealing
Mattie's diagnosis so I guess it's now better to say something rather than not.
Some oldies will remember Mattie and his family from the list a few years
back.
For the sake of accuracy I will however correct the article on one point -
Mattie actually had T-13 mosaic, yet in many ways his physical problems were
worse than many "full" T-13 children. The "without eyes" refers to a condition
that T-13 families will be aquainted with called anopthalmia, he had no eyes at
all, and the "part of his face missing" was a major cleft. The cleft was
repaired, his eyes of course could not be.
