[tri-wings] Re: Question about having Analee at home after her death.

Hi Erin,
I'm sorry that no one presented you with any options when your son died. If
we didn't have time to look into planning how we would deal with the death of
our kids we would'nt have had a clue. All of our children have medical issues
so we had to face the possibiliy as we adopted each of them.
It's my understanding that most hospitals will not and can not release a
body to anyone except a funeral home. The way around this is to contact local
funeral homes and let them know that a child has died, and you want the child
home for a few hours. Tell them you'd like for them to come to have the child
released. What we were told was that most of our local funeral homes would
take care of this at no charge. We were told we could carry her out together
and they would send us on our way once we were outside the hospital.
We didn't have to use that option since Analee did die at home. We did talk
to the funeral home in advance to let them know that if she died at home, we
planned to bring her there ourselves for the embalming, and that we would be
taking her home again with us. We also chose to have her wake/ visitation/etc
at home as well. We brought her to church ourselves, and took her to be
cremated ourselves. We just really felt the need to take care of her as much
as
we could without strangers having to be involved.
We plan to do the same for each of our children. There are no magical laws
that are different in MN. As long as a funeral home has been contacted and is
assisting with the cremation or burial than there is no issue with having
family members of any age in your home until the formalities take place. I do
believe that there are laws about embalming within 48hrs.
I'm not sure that knowing this info is going to make you feel any better.
Unfortunately it's too late for you to physically take your baby home but no
doubt, he has been there all along......
Nancy
