Of course, I remember Captain 11, Dave Dedrick. Is there anyone
around here who doesn't? The strangest part is that he was a
personal friend of a guy from my hometown. Both of them raced cars
in Sioux Falls. And two of my uncles also knew him personally. So I
had to stop to think that he really wasn't Captain 11 all the time.
Such a bummer!!
I have a cousin whose name is Brenda, but she is closer to my age
than your Brenda. I think that is a very pretty name, but so is
Jill. My brother had chosen Matthew Karl for my nephew, so when he
was born, my mom put a birth announcement in the newspaper. Two days
later, they changed his name. He just didn't look like a Matthew.
He is now our Dr. Dan. So Daniel Karl has a birth announcement with
the wrong name.
We tried to pick names that wouldn't be chosen by everyone else. In
my class at school, there were 5 Marys and at least 4 Judys. We
didn't want that. So we thought we had the "only" Wade in Tracy ~
that is until the first that I took him back for his first exam after
birth. The gal at the desk told me that she liked the name so well,
she was going to name her son Wade, too. Can't very well say "Don't
do it!" It was meant as a compliment. And the first time I subbed
after that, I found out that there was a teacher who had a grown son
named Wade. Three in Tracy in our small town. But at least, not all
in the same grade.
And we thought Cheryl was an ordinary name, but at the time she was
born, there were no other parents naming their daughters Cheryl. I
wanted to spell it Sharol (like it sounds - and with my initial), but
Dick wouldn't let me. Cheryl has since thanked me lots of times.
Having to spell our last name was enough for her. I thought I got
rid of that when I got married, but oh no, people are just afraid to
spell HELLeson. We laugh. :^) I don't really think that our kids'
names a pretty sounding. We chose them for other reasons. Strange
how we do that.
