I agree with Gloria, this is an old religious concept - the state of 
"limbo". However even the religion that started that thought has withdrawn 
it, totally and completely

I guess there are still some that havent been able to let go of what they 
were raised with. My SIL is one.

It is however hurtful, very hurtful and its left a lot of people with 
needless pain for many years. My grandfather was a devoutly religious man 
and the pain he apparently went through due to the concept of limbo is still 
talked about in my family (and is part of the reason my father would haveing 
nothing to do with religion, especially after my sister died). My 
grandfather lost his wife in childbirth and their third son. That was bad 
enough - but then to believe that his child would never get to heaven was an 
enormous guilt that he didn't need. He spent the rest of his life trying to 
help his son get to heaven.....
