Why do you think people say things like that?

Some I can understand (although I dont necessarily agree) eg "that they are 
better off" - they are trying to rationalise something that makes no sense. 
To make a positive out of a negative and they really cant think of anything 
positive.
I have actually heard some grieving parents say that their child is better 
off.

But Nancy, I am floored by that comment.
Instead of being easier it must feel like you got hit by a runaway train 
that turned around and came back again.
