Yes you are a Mom and you always will be.  The way I
look at it, everyone else has already past the fun
part - we still have that to look forward to when we
are reunited.  Your MIL certainly seems insensitive -
I find it so hard to believe people don't get it. 
It's one thing to not mention or forget dates but to
blatantly make comments and gestures such as those are
not excusable.
