[tri-wings] Re: Genetics Testing!!!-some pregnancy content

Dear Sharon-

>>>>>>Well - I have had a seven page horrible letter back from Colchest=
er
Hospital
telling me there was no way T18 could have been detected during my
pregnancy
as Nicholas had no signs!!!!! They have also refused me any further
testing
if I decide to try for another baby, they won't allow CVS or amnio as I=
 am
only 32 and not over 36 (some logic somewhere no doubt!). Peter and I =
now
have to pay =A3400.00 to see Professor Nicholaides in London if we want=
 any
further testing done.<<<<<

If you really want further testing done, I would seek out another=

doctor. I am very lucky to have the doctors that I have. They were
willing to do testing before I got pregnant this time and when I found =
out
I got pregnant. In fact, they were willing to test me during my first
pregnancy before we found Hope's problems. They told me that it is our=

right as a patient to have the testing done- no matter how old you are=

(I'm 26). As far as detecting the T18 during your pregnancy- Hope ha=
d
several signs, so the specialist was pretty certain she had T18 (or
Turner's Syndrome). He offered to do an amnio right there on the spot =
if
we wanted confirmation. (We were worried about the risk of miscarriage=
, so
we declined.) I think that an amnio would probably be the only way to =
find
T18 if there are no other signs- BUT don't quote me on that one!!!

>>>>>Firstly, I was told Nicholas had full Trisomy 18 and that you can'=
t be
a
carrier as it was a sheer "fluke" (in heir words, not mine. The hospit=
al
letter also refered to my gorgeous little boy as "an abnormal baby" all=
 the
way through the letter).<<<<< Secondly, How do they do this test and h=
ow
long does it take for the results
to come back?<<<<<

Hope also had Full Trisomy 18. The specialist and my doctors both said=

that they were pretty sure it was just a "fluke" also. They both told =
me
that we have a less than 1% chance of having a baby with Trisomy again.=

They told us that if we wanted to be certain they could do a quick gent=
ic
test. They said that they would take a cotton swab sample/rubbing from=
 the
inside of our mouth and then send it to the lab. They said that it wou=
ld
take 2-4 weeks to get the results back. We decided not to do the test=
ing,
and trust the doctors that this wouldn't happen again. So far, they're=

right.

I hope that this helps.
