Thanks Sharon :-)

((((((Sharon)))))) I'm sticking my neck out here as I don't have any medical
background at all but I'm guessing that they said this because over here its
only routine to offer the over 35's an amnio.However...should you get pregnant
and either scan or AFP test show any "oddities" then an amnio would most
certainly be something they would offer...(anything like the "wonderful"
professor I saw at Birmingham Women's Hospital and they would actively do their
best to get you to do it there and then...no thoughts just do it !!!).You know,
I'm sure, that everything here is based on cost and offering an amnio or cvs to
everyone would be extremely costly BUT the risk of miscarriage of a healthy
baby because of an amnio (for no apparent reason other than you had one child
with an extra chromosome)must come into their way of thinking. Not sure I agree
but just trying to see it from their way of thinking.....
>>, How do they do this test and how long does it take for the results
to come back?<<
Testing on you and hubby is done via blood...no more than a regular blood test
for anything. We both got tested (basically for my own piece of mind but even
knowing I am not a carrier doesnt stop the worry...so still no guarantees)and
just like the good old NHS the results were back and we then waited ages for an
appointment...they wouldnt discuss results via phone so we were on the waiting
list to see a geneticist for around maybe three months....but that was
Birmingham again and possibly longer than normal waiting lists???
You could maybe try and get in touch with a health vistor at your local
GP'S...(ours assigns one even if there is no baby to bring home and she is
there just in case I need help...still in direct contact after more than two
years since my last miscarriage).Hospitals IMHO tend to be more impersonal and
maybe the GP's could see what waiting is like and help you in that
direction...maybe they could even (and mine did) arrange for earlier scans in
any subsequent pregnancy and more non invasive assurance that baby is doing
ok......(extra scans, extra listening in to heartbeats etc).I know it doesnt
stop the chance of another miscarriage (and it didnt work for me) but all helps
in day to day reassurance.
big hugs
