[tri-wings] GENA

Gena

Again, not a doctor, but here's what I know.

1. It is indeed possible for the baby to have both T18 and T21. But its very
unlikely. These things happen I suppose.

2. It sounds to me as if all that has happened is the SCREENING tests rather
than diagnostic tests. So its entirely possible the baby could have anything,
or nothing at all.

I would guess that there will be at least some impact from the alcohol
consumption during pregnancy. Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is a funny thing. It
does not at all follow that someone who has drunk loads will have a more
disabled child than someone who has drunk infrequently. THe British MEdical
Association have the most up to date reseatch on FAS, a huge study that was
published at the start of this year. Its worth reading and is quite readable
and not too technical.

I would think that its probably best to focus on the actuall presenting
symptoms that the baby has, rather than the syndrome. I've discovered that the
actual underlying diagnosis is relatively unimportant, having now parented
three disabled children with different diagnoses. (T18, mystery development
delay / neuromuscular condition, and FAS).

I came here looking for advice about adopting my littlest Ryan, as he had a
diagnosis of FAS, which freaked everyone out. Everyone here gave me great
advice and I just tackle things as best I can. A good trusting relationship
with the doctors helps a bundle, especially if they will listen and respond to
your concerns. Read up a bit on the various conditions and check out with the
doctors what they plan to do about testing etc. Also check out things like
benefits and what you are entitled to in the way of support etc when you get
the baby. (are you fostering or adopting?) If you have hospital stays, etc to
contend with its best to have these things in place beforehand so you're not
fretting over the baby and your house/job/finances/cat etc.

Dont hesitate to drop me an email off-list if I can help any more. And
congratulations if you decide to make the brave leap into the unknown. Taking
on a baby with special needs is a big step, but incredibly rewarding. If your
heart says yes, follow it and stick in! (Sorry nancy, I've borrowed that bit
from you)Demi
