Dear Family and Friends,

Once again we are left facing the loss of a child. Our Sky was officially
pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m. Saturday August 26th.
Just yesterday, Friday she was fine. I took her to the clinic at noon for a UTI
and noticed that her shunt was not working properly as it has done many times
before. We continued on our afternoon while I periodically pumped the shunt by
hand. By 3p.m. it was clear that the shunt was malfunctioning and would need to
be replaced again as we had done 8 times in the past 2 years. At 4:50 p.m. we
drove to the cities and were forced to go to St Paul Childrens VS Gillette
where all of her previous surgeries have been done. The weekend policy is to
divert patients to better staffed operationg rooms on the weekends.
Unfortunately Skys Neurosurgeon was not on call this weekend and the on call
Dr. would'nt listen to me regardless of how hard I tried to convince him of a
shunt malfunction. Instead, he ruled out her rapidly declining condition as a
UTI.
Ultimatly, within 6 hours of her admition Sky was brain dead due to a shunt
malfunction which could have been treated with the same surgery she has had in
the past.
Legal issues require extensive testing to prove that there is no brain
activitiy which is part of the reason that it took an additional 22 hours to
reach the point we are at now.
All testing is now complete and I have given consent for the organ donation
team to begin their work to find possible uses for her organs. This process
generally takes about 24-36 hours before all of the procurement teams are flown
here to retreve the viable organs. After that, Sky and I will return to St
Cloud and we will hopefully have a service somewhat similar to Analee's. I
would imagine we will look towards Thurs or Fri??
Obviously things are very up in the air at this point, as we don't know if any
organs will be used, or how soon, and when the church might be able to help us
with another funeral.
I appologize for sending this out via email but I can't begin to consider
making phone calls at this point. Morgan and I are in such disbelief that it's
tough to carry on calls to each other that make much sense.
Please keep Sky in your prayers as well as Tony and Ian as they try to cope
with the confusion of their ever increasingly quiet household. Please too
remember to include our Analee in those prayers as she has only been gone since
last month.

Nancy
