Susan,
Thanks, Susan, but it ISN'T me that doesn't call without a reason. I
call them several times a week, but I usually only get to talk for a
few minutes. THEY are the ones who don't call unless they have a
reason. Both of my kids call me from the car when they are on the
way home from work. Usually, they are stuck in traffic. But then,
that is a good reason to limit the length of the call. When traffic
starts moving, or they get to where they are going (daycare), they
have to go right now.
But I did have a very pleasant surprise last night. I called Cheryl
at 7:15 pm. Of course, she and Ali were eating. She says that it
wouldn't matter what time I called, they would be eating. And I
think that is true. Either that or getting ready for bed. But Ali
was in rare form last night. She sang me several new songs. She was
just generally in a happy mood. I asked for Ali Grace when Cheryl
answered the phone, so she handed it to her and said it was for her.
Ali asked if it was Dad. Cheryl told her she would just have to find
out. So she answered with, "Hi. Who is this?" I answered, "Hi Ali
Grace. This is Grandma Helleson." I think I took her by surprise.
She talked a bit, then said, "Goodbye Helleson." I burst out
laughing and Cheryl did, too. She wanted to know what that was all
about. I told her. Then, she put Ali back on the phone and Ali
again said "Goodbye Helleson". I tried to sound tough and said,
"That's GRANDMA Helleson, to you young lady." She softened, and then
said, "Goodbye, Grandma Helleson." Then, she came back on the phone
several times to sing me a new song: halloween songs they had
learned at daycare. She even made up one that was hilarious. She
made my day. I really needed that.
I'm on my way to all of my obligations for the day. Better get
going. I've only got a few minutes.
Hugs,
Sheila Helleson
