When Kim and I went on a road trip right before Labor Day to Missouri and Iowa, 
we stayed in motel in Iowa with a microwave in the room and a complimentary bag 
of popcorn.  I'm sure you can already see where this is going!--  I put the 
popcorn in for the recommended lenghth of time--it didn't just have a popcorn 
setting on the microwave--and all of a sudden it was smoking really bad! I took 
it out and it just kept getting worse because the butter was so hot it was 
burning the popcorn fiercely!! We opened the window and I finally submerged the 
popcorn bag in a sink of water!  I was afraid the smoke detecter was going to 
go off.  We left the window open quite awhile, but the smell was still there.
Kim still laughs about it, wondering if the room still stinks!
