Laurie,
I know you wrote me off list for ideas about cp. To tell you the truth,
I'm not really versed on it myself. We treat Joe like anyone else, and cp
doesn't even cross my mind most of the times. I have had to remind myself
that his annoying little ticks are from cp, not him trying to bother me!
Joe is a lot like your Marissa in the fact that he was neglected as a child.
He was left in a wheelchair in front of the TV a lot, and was taken to the
police station at least once because he was left alone at a bus stop and was
trying to play with the little kids (little kids sometimes think he's
scary). I'm not sure if CPS was involved, but he was moved to a group home.
Andrew worked in the group home where Joe lived and recognized almost
immediately that he didn't belong there. Joe has no behaviors and didn't
get any attention because the staff was always trying to control the kids
who did. He was in diapers, which was ridiculous, and wasn't progressing at
all. We decided to take him in because it would allow one of us to stay
home when we had kids. Now Joe is doing great. His communication skills
have soared, and he is happy.
Anyway, it is such a blessing to have Joe in our lives. It seemed that
he was like training for Elanor (navigating the medicaid system, working
with someone with special needs, etc. I'm sorry he was born with a
disability, but looking at the rest of his family (brother in jail for drug
dealing, sister had her kids taken away, mom an alcoholic) I think maybe he
had it the best.
Jennifer, mom to Arwen, 6; Elanor (t18), 4; caregiver to Joe (cerebral palsy
& spastic displaysia), 25 & Eric, 18; and wife to Andrew
