When we found out that our son had a trisomy and that mom was the
carrier, all of the doctors and the geneticist from the hospital wanted us
to have our other children tested at that time. We decided not to have them
tested at that time because once they were, then they would be marked by the
insurance company as a carrier. We were afraid that later in life they
might have a harder time to get their own health ins., and if they showed
being a carrier, that may give the ins. co. a way out saying it was a
pre-existing condition. The doctors said that wouldn't happen, but we still
said NO.
Later on we had a meeting with our ins. co. geneticist and we brought up
the issue with them and they agreed with us about it, and added there is
plenty of time for them to be tested, why do it now? Let your other
children grow up first then when they find someone they wish to marrie and
have children with, that is the time when they should be tested.
Gina: Don't let it worry you unless you want more children then let
the future lead its course and make sure that your other children know what
can happen if they do things they shouldn't be doing before marriage and to
make sure they have themselves tested before they do have children.
GOOD LUCK
Ps: I belong to another trisomy group, the 11/22 group but I have found
that no matter what the trisomy may be we all have a little information that
we have learned along the way to help and I also learn from some of your
letters to one another, THANK YOU.
