CVS stands for chorionic villi sampling. They take a small sample of the
cells that form the placenta (via the vagina usually but they may have to go
through the abdomen in some cases) and test those. It can be done a lot
earlier than an amnio (11 weeks, but at 11 weeks there isn't enough amniotic
fluid to do an amnio).

But it has a very high rate of picking up a condition called placental
mosaicism. That is where the placenta has a mosaic chromosomal anomaly but
the baby is usually NOT effected by it.

Sadly I have spoken to a lot of parents who have had this scare after a CVS
and its one of those worries and questions that can't be completely
eliminated/answered until after the baby is born. So it causes the families
months of distress if the continue on with the pregnancy or worse the
parents may elect to terminate the pregnancy only to find that there was
nothing wrong with the baby. As a result I am starting to become anti CVS
and think perhaps people are better off waiting the extra 6 weeks and having
the amnio......... but that is my personal opinion on a CVS..........

A life with love will have some thorns, but a life without love will have no
roses.
