Ketones (no y - thats the 60's band :-)) are a byproduct of burning fat as
an energy store. If you want the "common" chemical name its acetone.
When you burn fat then there are waste products that the cells must get rid
of - ketones. These are dumped into the blood and excreted by the liver and
kidneys. When you produce ketones it leads to a condition called
ketoacidosis commonly associated with diabetes where diabetics have
uncontrolled ketoacidosis leading to coma and death(giving sugar stops the
production of ketones, law of order, sugar is used first as an energy store
before fats). A constant state of ketoacidosis is also the condition thats
induced by the ketogenic diet used for epilepsy and is why the ketogenic
diet must be carefully administered.
While ketones are "toxic" to the body they are also a very unavoidable part
of dieting - you must burn fat to loose weight so you must produce ketones.
They wont cause you any real problems unless you starve yourself and allow
yourself to get dehydrated. (or if your kidneys aren't working properly)
Checking for ketones in the urine is one test that doctors use to check on
people with eating disorders or to see how sick a person is who has vomiting
etc. Drinking lots of free water (that is plain water not water included in
other foods eg juice, tea etc) helps to keep the kidneys working and so
flushing the ketones out. Eating frequent small meals with a high GI index
also helps (lots of complex carbohydrates) as it evens out the burning of
fat.
Karen's psuedo - medical degree in ketones comes from the fact that when
Alex gets hypoglycemic he also produces ketones :-)) The fact that he does
actually ruled out some dangerous conditions where people can't produce
ketones.......
