Personally I think this is rude.
What exactly is subnormal?? Does he mean that her eyes need correcting for
refractive errors? or does he mean that they are immature?
With Alex I have always taken the thought path that he has enough problems
to contend with without dealing with the problems that can be corrected or
at least ameliorated.
Because he has other issues its MORE important for him to be able to see and
hear and use all of his senses to their maximum.
A good example was Alex's hearing - everyone kept telling me that his
hearing was fine. It was my problem because I expected too much from him,
after all he "was retarded". The long and the short of that story (and years
of fighting) is that he is NOT retarded but he does have hearing issues
which means he misses out on a lot of the learning that normally takes place
aurally.
Alex needs every opportunity to learn and so I wont risk his aural and
visual senses at all.
Alex is a little far sighted, not enough to need correcting at this stage,
but it is being monitored. He did suffer some loss of contrast vision after
being on Sabril. Enough to alert us to the fact that we needed to stop the
drug but not enough to be a functional problem. His eyes however are
immature, simply meaning that they are slower to develop and mature than the
average child. That too was being monitored and stopped being an issue after
we started the lutein (spinach juice). Within 3 months of starting the
lutein his eyes started catching up. Nine months later, and without knowing
that we had started the lutein the opthamologist commented that his eyes had
matured more in the past 6 months than they had in the previous 18 months.
We will be keeping on with the lutein :-)) BTW the opthamologist took the
info on lutein in T-18 and is trying it with other kids.
Man must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind him to the fact that
each moment of his life is a miracle and a mystery.
