Cindy could I ask a few questions? There is absolutely no critisism in my
comments at all - personally I think that this is a viable option for some
our children. However over here (Australia) its totally illegal for our kids
to be sterilised.
In order for it to even be considered the family must go before a panel and
convince them that its in the best interests of the child. The process is
worse than the Spanish Inquisition and very rarely do they approve the
surgery.
Thats not to say that some kids do have the surgery - but its usually done
"underground" and the families run the risk of someone (usually hospital
staff or an extended family member) letting the authorities know - in which
case massive legal suits follow - and there have been a few. A number of
parents have been removed as their child's guardian over the issue and some
have been jailed.
I have a dear friend who was Indian. She went to the extremes of sedating
her daughter for a flight to India just to have the surgery done over there.
While I don't think that this is a decision that should be made lightly - I
also think its wrong that families need to resort to such drastic measures,
when they have the best interests of their child at heart (and family).
So what is the situation in the US? Do you not have groups that advocate
actively against this?
No flames on the ethics please!! This subject should fall under the
"personal decision" banner.
I have not lost my mind - it's backed up on disk somewhere.
