[tri-med] Re: t-13 w/ heart problems

Hi LouAnn. I can't help you with any of the specifics, but just wanted to
send a note of encouragement to you and your daughter. I'll be 23 next
month, so I'm close in age to your daughter, and am expecting a son who is
suspected to have either t18 or t13. He is due in 2 1/2 weeks! We have had
two echocardiograms, and they have found a ventricular septal defect (which
is a hole between the bottom two chambers of the heart) as well as a
thickened pulmonary valve. Neither of these is life-threatening, but they
will mean his heart has to work harder to deliver the same amount of
oxygenated blood to his system. The hole is big enough that open heart
surgery would be necessary to close it. We have decided to wait until he is
out to make any decisions about that, but have been told by our cardiologist
that they would be reticent to perform the surgery with the trisomy
diagnosis, so I know if we decide it is right for him we will have to fight.

I know that the waiting is very hard - we have known now about Jeremiah for
almost 20 weeks! - but cherish each and every day and each and every kick.

God's peace to you and your family;

Heather
