I too remember a warning about slippery elm, but I think it was one of the
herbs mentioned in a general concern about quality and regulation of natural
remedies.
As you know there are no licensing bodies for natural remedies, and what
regulations that are in place are often not as stringent as they could or
should be. (Aussies would be well aware of that with the recent Pan debacle)
Anyway from memory slippery elm was one of those remedies that came under
fire (and still does). Apparently the therapeutic properties are contained
in the inner bark not the outer bark. But because slippery elm is currently
a "popular" remedy they haven't been able to keep up supply of the inner
bark, so they started substituting the outer bark in remedies, and of course
the outer bark has no therapeutic value.
So from memory the concern centered around the quality of slippery elm
products that people were buying, but that quality issue surrounds a lot of
natural remedies.
Of course if your nutty like me - you grow your own wherever possible - the
echinacea has worked out great!!! Not sure I have room for another tree in
the backyard :-)
"I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems
don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making
the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious
ambiguity."
