Did I ever tell you about Kaila and phenobarb? After third seizure, docs
decided that it was necessary, so started her on standard dose. She was just
short
of two years old. This was in 1980. there weren't a lot of choices then.
Anyway, the first day was ok, but the second morning I gave her the medication
and
then we went out for breakfast. She was not so bad tempered, just crazed and
going at about a hundred miles an hour. As she was flinging bites of pancake
across the restaurant, we considered leaving without her, but decided just to
go home and call doc instead. We dropped the dose down to about 1/4 of normal
for her size and then slowly titrated up. It wasn't until she was no longer
taking it that studies started showing that cognitive dulling was a side
effect.
But she had so many other risk factors, hard to say what most contributed to
her learning disabilities. She is doing ok now and that is what matters most.
