Alex has had a TERRIBLE time with an eczema outbreak since mid-June. We'd soak
(plain H20 and water with tee-tree oil), sun, prescription eczema cream. We'd
start to make progress in clearing up his hands then WHAMO, he'd be back to
open and bleeding, flaking and cracked hands---80% of his left hand and maybe
30% of his right are affected.
They are ugly and people keep asking what happened to his hands. :-(
I finally made an appt with a dermatologist (he's never seen one). Two weeks
later.........
Thought we'd go in and get some new med.............instead they took a biopsy
(Alex has 2 stitches). Dr thinks that what began as a typical eczema outbreak
caused the skin breakdown that allowed either bacteria or fungus to get in
below the skin. Truthfully, the dr wasn't 100% on just what it was.
They then put a steroid powder on the broken skin.
Gave Alex a prescription for a gel aimed at clearing fungus.
If the biopsy comes back with fungus in the cells then Alex will be put on an
oral anti-fungal. Same deal for bacteria.
Alex's hands HURT him right now and the stitches pull everytime he uses his
hand (they're right by the base of his thumb). His left hand resembles raw
meet.
Last night, day 2 of the prescription, Alex DID say he thinks his hands hurt
less. And it looks as if they open cracks may be healing. I'll know more when
he wakes up this am and get a look at 48 hrs down the road of treatment.
So now I'm kicking myself that I didn't take him in sooner and end his now
chronic hand pain. sheesh........
