Hi Barb-I've still been meaning to get back to you on the other email--I've
been having some issues with cramping-so have been kind of taking it easy.
Anyway, Mitchell has a bronch done every year. We actually just saw the
pulmonologist yesterday and we'll be scheduling his for April or May. You
can do them 2 ways--under general and under light sedation. With something
like tracheamalacia-they have said that it is much more accurate to do it
under light sedation--under general the airway doesn't always function the
way it would if they were awake so this is why they do a light sedation.
We've never had one done under general. This is tricky because I absolutely
HATE light sedation-we do not allow them to use chloryl hydrate--not sure
what they use-I think it is called pentibarb or something like that-he seems
to do better under it. With this bronch we are able to see all the way down
to Mitchell's bronchials-which is how we discovered his bronchialmalacia. It
is a risky procedure as you can do some damage if not done carefully-but it
is pretty common for kids with trachs-they typically do them before taking
the trach out-and most have them done every year or year and a half. I
personally hate our pulmonologist-but he is a perfectionist at the
bronch-which is the important thing. He is the only one in the region-so we
put up with him-but if one were to come in the area we'd switch in a
heartbeat. But, like I said-he does well with the bronchs. Let me know if
you have anymore questions. Again-I may be slow to respond-I'm a little
slower these days. :)
Take care
Katie
