"Alex will maintain passing grades in all classes" is a part of his IEP. If
necessary he can go to a "P"ass/"F"ail grade (also in his IEP). Students who
go that route will pass if they've been making the effort. This is what
happened in computer apps last semester. Alex fell sooo far behind due to
illness AND his slow processing issues that even with going in multiple
extra hours per week couldn't catch up/stay caught up. He ended up with a P.
This means he still gets credit for the class (points toward graduation) but
it doesn't affect his grade point average at all.

Answering your question Jude, it's a catch-all clause in the IEP. It means
that if the student isn't achieving a passing grade in a class then the
reason why would be determined and actions taken to help the student
achieve. If it's tests then perhaps a student would be allowed to re-take
the test or correct the test for extra points (something his science teacher
does for the whole class all year).

Interestingly, it's not something Jim or I requested be in the IEP but a
"standard" goal for our district is seems as Alex isn't the only student
with this a goal. Of course, there are no direct outlines included in the
IEP as to how this is to be accomplished. :-)

I have a few ideas as to why the district does it this way but don't know
for a fact what their reasons are.
