[tri-med] opthamologist/Penny

Hi Penny,
My adopted daughter, Marissa has nystagmus, Septo Optic Dysplasia, ONH. In a
nutshell, she is legally blind...and has no depth perception, cannot see 30
degree's above eye level and vision changes daily.
Her aide is complaining that Marissa walks behind her when they are going to
resource, speech, lunch...etc....
I'm sure Marissa does this for safety! I think that is smart....teacher
tests the path first, then Marissa follows =)

Her aide is trying to get her to walk in FRONT of her, so she is not
dependant on an adult. I don't agree. I think at the very least they should be
side
by side. We hold Marissa's hand in uncharted territory or in really big
places..like fairs, use her wheel chair.

How does Devon get around at school? Don't you think it takes a lot of
concentration for our kids to walk and use their limited vision? I just wish
they
would have some empathy here. I really don't think they get the gist of her
vision impairments.

I was thinking of brining in blind folds w/hole in the and letting the class
see how Marissa sees the world..........heck, teachers need to try this too.

I'm just shocked they have been pushing her to walk ahead of them!!
Grrrrrrr. (Mama bear growls)

Happy Holidays Penny to You and Yours!!
