[tri-med] Re: opthamologist

Kelly,
Morgan has had eye surgery twice for strabismus. It is not the same thing, I
know, so maybe it doesn't apply. We did have an experience similar to yours
when Morgan was very small. We saw and ENT when Morgan was 6 mos. old, who
told us that Morgan's hearing loss was bad enough that he would recommend
hearing aids, but that all things considered for Morgan, if we did not choose
to get the aids he would totally understand our decision. Mike and I didn't
think twice about it, granted it was not a surgery, we wanted Morgan to have an
opportunity to hear normally. Years later I brought it up to this same ENT
what he had said to us during that visit and he told me that it was his belief
that he doesn't push for procedures or equipment that might put an unnecessary
burden on a family. He knew that insurance wouldn't cover the aids and that we
would have to pay out of pocket. I guess he was well meaning, but what he said
didn't come out quite right. This particular dr. has become a big fan of
Morgan. He doesn't see him anymore, though.
I guess that doesn't really help as far as advice goes. I will tell you this,
and this is strictly my and Mike's opinion, we have decided that any procedure
that a dr. would normally do for any "normal" child we will probably do for
Morgan. Of course, we would consider every scenario individually, but for
something like you are talking we would choose to have the procedure done. But
whatever you choose should be your decision not the dr's, not mine. Good luck,
it can be very hard trying to decide what to do or not do. There is no wrong
or right.
