Mikki:

First of all, I would want to find out from Brendan's Primary
Care Physician if it's okay to feed him solids this early in
life. The standard for most babies is to NOT feed them
solids until at least 8 or 9 months and sometimes a year
depending upon their overall health and weight gain.

Some children (babies) in particular may be allergic
to certain types of cereals and/or food. That's why
it's so important to introduce solids just one at a time
to see how they react.

If Brendan is coughing and wheezing, it's possible (not
entirely positive) that he's allergic to rice cereal and/or
other grains.

Has Brendan been breastfed? Can he receive breastmilk?
Because breastmilk is the best for any child under the age
of 12 months in order to boost their immune system.

My daughter, Kashmir who is full Trisomy 18 didn't have
the ability to suck or swallow (still doesn't), but we tube
fed her my breastmilk for the first few months of her life.
I spent hours pumping for her. Just an idea for you.

If you and/or the doctors are concerned about weight
gain, high-calorie formula coupled with something like
MCT oil will do the trick to help him gain weight quickly.

Does he have any cardiac or respiratory conditions?
If he has a respiratory condition, I believe most doctors
would steer you away from giving him anything with
grains in it as this could compromise his breathing
ability.

If I were in your shoes, I would consult a GI Specialist,
a Nutrionist along with a Pediatric Intensivist to ensure
that he doesn't have any allergies, or problems with
the formula and/or rice cereal.

I would also consult a Pediatric Pulmonologist to check
his lungs to ensure that he doesn't have BPD or any
other respiratory condition.

As far as the excess saliva goes, most Pediatric
Pulmonologists would prescribe something along the lines
of a Scopalomine patch to reduce secretions.

Your best bet is to have several different Pediatric
specialists check Brendan, make their recommendations
and then you decide what you think is best for your child.

Good luck.
