[tri-med] newspaper info

Reading the Saturday paper this morning I found a couple of interesting, and
pertinent to this list, things.
The first was an article about a 22 D.D. woman found malnourished, in filth and
cold, put into that situation by her mother. The Mom is now in jail. Made my
heart sink.

Further back in the newspaper was an article that I knew would hit a cord with
some as questions about siblings becoming responsible for their disabled
brothers and sisters was the subject of the article and those discussions have
been held on the tri-med site before.

Apparently Georgia has been on the ball with networking and info/support arena.
There is apparently a group called AADD, Atlanta Alliance on Developmental
Disabilities , which is providing programs and advocacy for people with D.D.

The article listed a site that is a 'national effort dedicated to the lifelong
concerns of brothers and sisters of people who have special health,
developmental or mental health concerns. It's a national group.
www.siblingsupport.org
I went to the site and quickly looked around and it appears as if there's some
good stuff there!

There was also 'Unlock the waiting lists". "The mission of this campaign is to
reduce the waiting lists for people with disabilities who need home and
community based services". This is for the state of Georgia only.

They might even know of sister sites in other states if anyone was interested.

A sibling in the article also took a "Partners in Policymaking" course
sponsored by the Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities and AADD
group.
This was again in the state of Georgia.
Apparently gaining info from attending this course has helped spawn a number of
changes and growth of support services as the result of people taking action
after they learn how.

This whole article was quite long, wish I could type out the whole thing!
