In the People Magazine (May 27) there is an article about a respite house
for medically needy kids. You can't access the entire article from their web
site (people.com) because I tried. :-( I did get the web addy for Coach
House. www.coachcarecenter.org/
Basically, a woman named Denise Callarman opened a respite house (she'd had
a medically fragile son). She opened Coach House. It's in Naperville, Ill.
Parents can leave kids with complex medical needs for up to 2 weeks in the
care of skilled nurses and devoted volunteers. It's a nonprofit facility and
accepts kids up to age 188 and handle 10 guests at a time. She and another
mom with ventilator dependent children got funding, wrote grant proposals,
lobbied politicians and attended medical conferences.
Once quote in the article from a Pam Roman, "The good news is that we're
saving many more of these kids then we did 20 yrs ago. The bad news is that
we haven't caught up with what a family needs in order to care for them.
Parents barely have time to shower, much less to attend their other child's
soccer game". She also talks about the shortage of nurses and even when a
family can find one ins companies often won't cover them.
Coach house costs $600 per day but in most cases is covered at least in
party by health ins. Callarman waives fees for those who can't pay, relying
on donations.
The whole thing made me think of many of you! Maybe this place is close
enough for somebody from the lists to utilize. Apparently there are some
others like it around....maybe the site can lead someone to them.
