so we had akaiya's iep meeting today and after we finished talking about
kaiya's wide variety of really cute footwear we were able to get down to
business. akaiya is a loud kid. she keeps up a pretty constant "aaaaaaaaa"
noise which varies according to her mood or activity. they are really
interested in getting her to stop making this noise as it is inappropriate for
a lot of settings ie: assemblies, library, story time, etc... she does stop
making the noise when she has one on one attention, and the person providing
the attention has to be right in her face talking directly to her.? they are
actually concerned that she might be damaging her vocal cords b/c by the end of
the school day she sounds kind of raspy. any suggestions on how to quiet a kid
down would be greatly appreciated!
kaiya has also been keeping her hands in her mouth a whole lot for the past
couple months. she has always been a finger chewer - but lately it has
been?both hands, and she bites down so hard that i'm afraid she's going to hurt
herself. when her hands are in her mouth she has drool just pooring out
everywhere. she gets so wet at school that they change her whole outfit. she
has always been drooly, but not to this extent. she doesn't even drink that
much so i have no idea where she gets all the water from!? the school has some
concerns that she might start experiencing break down of the skin on her hands.
the things we have tried for both problems are pretty similar. we give her toys
- usually vibrating toys. when her hands are in her mouth we have tried putting
little mittens on her hands...and have even gone as far as to use the elbow
immobilizers to keep her hands away from her mouth. any more ideas would be
great.
