Our prenatal genetics program is so aggressive, it is hard to believe.
I have a friend whose daughter has albinism. (albino) She runs and plays like
other kids but she has to be careful in the sun.
When the mom was speaking to the geneticist (at the same hospital where Annie
died) she told her that if she conceived again, they could test for the gene
and if the next baby had it, they could "gently terminate" the pregnancy. The
mother was shocked because her 4 yr old was standing there when this was said
and because she couldn't imagine terminating a pregnancy for such a minor
problem. She made it very clear that she was NOT interested.
A year later, the mom became pregnant and when she went for the first
appointment to her OB a geneticist was sitting there.
This is the nature of public health. I think it has gone well beyond an
aversion to disability. People want perfection. As the article states, the
tests will be sooner and capable of checking everything.
If anyone has ever seen the movie Gattica,it gives you an idea of the future I
think. (movie is avail on line)
The theme for the movie is perfect, "there is no gene for the human spirit".
