Jude don't you dare beat yourself up on that. Remember the reason that you
went is because she wasn't going!!! The truth is every doctor has a
different opinion on what regular means. And being regular is no guarantee
that they are not backing up anyway.
My eldest had Hirschprungs - I took her to the ped when she hadn't gone
after 10 days - he said that was fine as she was breast fed. I took her to
another ped after 20 days with no go. He freaked (because her belly was so
distended) and made an appointment with the GI (he also emptyed her). It
took a week for the GI appointment.
The GI saw her at 7 days and then 28 days with no motion and he wasn't all
that worried. He put her on a suppository / stimulant routine but he only
wanted a motion once a week. Even after the Hirschprungs surgery he only
wanted 1 or 2 motions a week. My mother however had been told daily with my
sister (who also had Hirschprungs)
Every GI I have ever seen has a different opinion - some say every day, some
say 2 -3 days and one even said once a week. Besides going regularly is no
guarantee that they are not backed up.
Alex has a motion EVERY day sometimes 2 or 3 times but he still gets backed
up on a regular basis, in fact I think he is backed up all the time. Now
that he isnt having 6 monthly abdo ultrasounds the only way I can tell that
the back up is bad is because he gets "overflow". It's so much harder
managing it for the master these days because I am not allowed to know that
personal stuff anymore. Heaven help me if he ever learns to clean the toilet
himself because then I will never know!!!
Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
