[tri-med] Re: hands - splints and pt

PT and splints for Soleah as well. Her hands were clenched and the outside
(index and pinky) were over lapping the inside fingers. It didn't look like
they'd ever be fuctional. They not only look completely "normal" now but she
can pick up the smallest of objects and pinch the heck out of you!
If I remember rightly they are the same that Alex had - neoprene that when
laying flat look like a Y?
When Alex was born his thumb sat in the middle of his palm (hypoplastic
thumb). Expert opinion was that he would never have functional use and there
were odd discussions about surgery - never serious ones.

Lots of therapy and the little neoprene splints did the trick - he certainly
does have a functional thumb, though he still struggles with small buttons,
or jean buttons etc. These days he wears a spica thumb splint for writing,
but only because his finger and thumb joints are so loose that when he puts
pressure on the pen the go into the oddest positions and I worry about long
term joint damage.
