[tri-med] Re: foot length

Akaiya has rockerbottom feet - although they seem to be changing shape...I
thought it might be because she is wearing her AFO's more often? Her feet have
always been REALLY little. She is 4.5 yrs old and wears an infants size 5.5 -
6 shoe (an 8 with her braces on) Kaiya's toes are so tiny they almost look
like they shouldn't be able to function. She's all about her feet lately
though so she wiggles her toes and she can separate them - it makes her laugh.
I've never heard of the correllation between foot size and gestational age...I
know that in my own family, my nephew was born 2 weeks early but had the
biggest feet ever (size 2!), and his sister that was born a couple weeks early
as
well had little feet...

I'm taking a class in neonatal intensive care right now from Indiana
University, and a question has come among us. Our textbook states, "One
quick and
effective way to estimate gestational age is by measuring foot length.
Foot
length of appropriate-for-gestational-age preterm infants has been
correlated
with gestational age." My question is, do you know of trisomies that
present
with altered foot length/shape. Don't some trisomy kids have rocker bottom
feet?
Thanks!

Oh, how the little things
Strengthen my tiny wings,
Help me to take on the world,
When you love me,
There's nothing I wouldn't try,
I might even fly.
