[tri-med] dislocating joints

Hey folks,
Alex has hypermobile shoulders and thumbs. But for the past 6-8 months he's had
a pinky finger (5th digit) dislocate at the knuckle a few times.

He's figured out how to 'put it back in' but it's painful with it goes out.

Yesterday Alex's finger dislocated 4 times!!!!!!! The one time he was playing
cards with Jim's Mom (I was out on a funeral home visitation) and he had a
great deal of difficulty getting it back in. She freaked out and wanted to take
him to the hospital apparently.

My question: I know the triers are more prone to this type of thing. Other than
surgery, what can be done? A splint perhaps?

If this is increasing in frequency and Alex is having trouble getting the
finger back into place what options are there?

What bothers me most is that it HURTS him.

I know prev discussions have been held on dislocations in triers in which I
learned (much to my surprise!!!) that dislocating hips (for example) aren't
painful to triers.
As the survivor of a dislocated shoulder and the excruciating pain it entails
I'm happy that some don't have that kind of pain!!!

But Alex experiences pain each time. Don't know if that's significant or not.

Before we make a drs appt I wanted to get some views/experiences from the list
experts!

Thanks,
Michelle mom to Alex (18, partial trisomy 14 mosaic) and Molly (14)
