Jonathan has a dislocated hip. He also has a leg fracture. The doctors
think he will keep getting the leg fractures considering the condition he is
in. The doctors told her it would be a 5 hour surgery and she doesn't
think he could survive this. If they wait a year, it could cause him a lot
of pain. She is wondering if any of your kids had this >surgery and what
the outcome was.
Not surgery and not a kid but here's my 2cents worth.
When I dislocated my shoulder and fractured the head of the humerous I
learned a few things about dislocations.
1. Dislocations HURT like the dickens. Wait a year to fix it........you are
kidding right? I simply can't imagine living in that kind of pain for days
let alone a year. I nearly kissed the dr who finally ordered up my morphine
(they wouldn't medicate me until they'd ruled out a concussion). When she
said, "keep giving it to her until she's not in pain anymore" I nearly
swooned in relief.
We won't even discuss the acute pain of physical therapy following a
traumatic dislocation.
I'm cringing for the pain that child must be in.
2. The longer a joint is dislocated the more damage is done. This is due to
the stretching of the ligaments/muscles etc in directions/positions they
shouldn't be. I was also told the longer a joint is "out" the harder it is
to get things back in and back in well.
3. The longer the joint is dislocated the more stretched the
muscles/ligaments are and WHEN the dislocation is reduced those same
muscles/ligaments are going to be "loose" and the joint's susceptibility to
dislocation go up. Meaning, the longer it's dislocated before fixing it the
more likely you are to dislocate again in the future because the fixtures
that hold the joint in place aren't tight.
Wow, I hope that little guy gets some help soon.
