My son, David, had a diaphragmatic hernia at birth. Everything that should
have been in the abdomen was in the chest, compromising one of his lungs.
He had one lung that was not compromised, which helped. He was 2 1/2 lb. at
birth. We had him at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans because they had an
ECMO machine (baby heart-lung machine), but he was too small to be on it.
He needed to be 4 lb. The surgeon waited 3 days to do the surgery, thinking
he would die. When he didn't, he agreed to do to the surgery. David is now
9 years old and just finished 3rd grade. He was on oxygen for 1 1/2 years
because of the small lung, but does fine most of the time now. We have to
watch him when he is out in the heat because our Florida summer can make it
hard to breathe even if you have normal lungs.
If I can answer any questions, please ask.
