[tri-med] Re: constipation

>What is senna? Is it OTC?

Nicole,

An ancient herbal remedy....You'll find it
in health food stores, and probably even the
drug store. Comes in at least tablets and
granular form.

Philina has never had a problem with
constipation. She has what I call a
nervous bowel. All I ever had to do was
take her to a doctor's office, therapist,
or walk in the door of the hospital, and
within 10 minutes she needed a new diaper.
Or these days to be taken to the bathroom...

But Sennacot is the brand name we used in
the nursing homes. It has kind of a mild
chocolaty taste to it. What I use to do
when I worked at Country Care Christian
Home (had kitchen privileges there) to get
some of my more difficult patients to take
it, was make them a cup of warm "cocoa"
before bed. Just heated up their granules
in some milk with a drop of vanilla and a
little sugar. They all loved it....

Variation on that theme that I used at
Hacienda was to make them an ice cream
sundae with extract of cascara (licorice
flavored tonic) or a cherry flavored one
(forget the name of that one now).
