Most definitely.
If your baby cannot suck for whatever reason, the nurses should help the mum
to express. What is expressed (and the first attempt is usually only a few
mls of colostrum) can then be given to the baby via whatever means the baby
is being fed eg bottle, NG tube or whatever.

I have fed all my children breast milk from day one that way. With Alex I
pumped exclusively and fed him for 4 months by NG tube in the hospital and
by eyedropper and bottle at home. At 4 months or there abouts he finally
learnt to latch and breast feed for himself.

If however you are asking about expressing the colostrum before birth - I
dont think thats encouraged, but some of the nurses on the list may have a
better idea.

After birth though, breast milk can be expressed and stored in the fridge
and freezer. My mum is probably still finding little packages of breast milk
in her freezer :-))

There was a study published in the last week or so that suggested babies who
had colostrum placed on a pacifier when they had painful procedures like
heel pricks etc have less biochemical pain responses than babies just given
a pacifier...........
